Kwale, KENYA: A man was on Tuesday burnt beyond recognition after his car collided with a lorry resulting into a huge explosion.
The incident occurred at Ng’ombeni checkpoint along the Likoni-Lunga Lunga highway.
Matuga OCPD Japhet Kibuga confirmed the incident which occurred at around 7:30 am to Baraka FM, saying that the car (a Probox) was coming from Kwale and the lorry from Mombasa when the lorry rammed into the car.
He noted that the Pro box was transporting charcoal which he claimed contributed to the huge fire after the explosion.
“All the seats were filled with charcoal and that is why the fire was too much to be put off by the locals who had run into the scene to save the victim,” he said.
He added that they did not get the lorry driver as he escaped, but they have taken the lorry to Diani police station hoping the owner will come and claim it.
Locals who witnessed the incident said the lorry from Mombasa was over speeding when it was overtaking and faced the Probox head on.
“The lorry rammed into the pro box and locked the exit door that is why we could not save the driver,” said Baraka Ali.
