Nairobi,KENYA: Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioner Dr Roselyn Kwamboka Akombe has resigned.

Dr. Akombe resigned en route to Dubai.

In a signed statement, Akombe says for many months she has questioned her role as a commissioner of IEBC.She accuses the commission of being party to the current crisis, saying its under siege.

Dr.Akombe names partisan commissioners as some of the reasons for tendering her resignation 8 days to repeat presidential polls.

“It has become extremely difficult to continue attending plenary meetings where commissioners come ready to vote along partisan lines and not discuss merit of issues before them’, Dr.Akombe says in her statement.

She further blames her fellow commissioners of taking lightly the safety of IEBC staff in the field especially in Homabay, Nairobi, Siaya and Kisumu, forcing her to quit.

According to Dr.Akombe, her fellow commissioners are keen to have an election even if it is at the cost of the lives of electoral staff and voters.

“It is unacceptable for any party to disrupt, attack and injure staff in Mumias, Bungoma, Homabay, Siaya and Kisumu. These acts must be condemned by all and action taken against the perpetrators”, she added.

Dr. Akombe also accused IEBC’s legal department of skewed advice to fit partisan political interests.

“The commission in its current state can surely not guarantee a credible election on 26 October 2017. I do not want to be party to such a mockery to electoral integrity”, she said.

Her resignation comes barely 8 days to repeat presidential elections.
