5 arrested over links to crime in Old town,Mombasa

Mombasa,KENYA :Police in Mombasa have arrested five suspected  criminals  and seized several crude weapons in the Old town area of Mombasa.

The joint operation   that saw their arrest was carried out by various security agencies on Friday night led by central OCS Baranabas Chumo.

This was  following a public outcry   from area residents.

Police have released the names of the five  as Mohammed Shaffi,Nuru Zani,Swaleh Mbarak,Ismael Najib and Sharif Mbarak.

The 5 were arrested in areas of Kibokoni,Mpango wa Papa,Old port and Fort Jesus.

Police say they also recovered a pair of military attire from the suspects

Mombasa police boss Lucas Ogara confirmed the arrest terming  it as a”  breakthrough”

“We planned the operation and I can confirm to you this are the right people we have been looking , we have been receiving complaints from the residents over this gangs, yesterday was their 40th day”.Ogara told Baraka FM.

“One of the suspects has a warrant of arrest on his head and another one was out on   bond,” added the police boss.

The suspects are being held at central police waiting to be arraigned in court Tuesday.
Old town residents have requested the police to continue with the operation to flush out all the gangs residing in the area.

“Kudos to police for a wonderful job they did to wipe out this notorious gangs, we now have calm in our tourist hub center but we are urging them to continue with the same spirit, give deaf ears to politicians who are after votes not minding our businesses which are closing down because of insecurity,” said Mohammed local businessman in the area.
