Mombasa,KENYA:Six people are feared dead in Kilifi and Mombasa counties as the nurses strike entered its second day.

This is according to witness accounts of patients stranded at public hospitals Mombasa and Kilifi counties.

According to Mwanahamisi Musa a patient at the Coast general hospital, two patients have died in the ward since the nurses began their strike on Monday.

Mwanahamisi who herself is has been admitted at the hospital for the past two weeks, say that nurses stayed away from the hospital.

“Yesterday the nurses were here but they did not attend to anyone as they were just idling around and today the nurses are not around.” she said.

At the emergency section , another patient Hanifa Mohamed told Baraka fm that she has been stranded at the hospital for the second day in a row

Hanifa reported seeing patient dying at the casualty centre moments after being brought in an ambulance .

The situation in Kilifi County remained the same and according to Walter Kenga an eye witness who spoke to Baraka FM on phone, three people had died at the Kilifi General Hospital.

“I saw two men and a lady being wheeled away from the wards while I had gone to visit a relative.”Kenga said.

A spot check by Baraka Fm at the coast General hospital  revealed long queues at the casualty centre and no nurse was spotted at the wards except for  trainees.

The nurses’ strike kicked off on Monday after they accused the government of  failing to honor the terms of a return to work formula signed in December 2016.

Efforts to get officials at the Kilifi county hospital and the Coast general hospital to comment were futile.
