Kilifi,KENYA: One person is feared dead and other two people rescued at the Mbogholo Bridge along Mombasa-Kilifi highway after their lorry plunged into the river on Wednesday.

According to witnesses, the driver of the lorry was speeding when he lost control after tyring to slow down following the bad condition of the road prompting the lorry to plunge into the river.

Two occupants were rescued by Good Samaritans who jumped into the river and managed to pull them out. However, a third occupant was swept away by the heavy currents.

Mwamunye Mungoma Pacha, a resident, said he had to seek help from his fellow residents to rescue the drowning souls.

“I saw the canter in high speed, the driver tried to control the speed but failed and it ended in the water,” Mungoma .We tried to rescue them all but on our return to the water after rescuing the first two.We couldn’t find the other person, he had drowned and is nowhere to be seen,” he added.

Another resident blamed the Kilifi county government for the mishap saying it has failed to put warning signage as renovations continue in the area.

“I think it’s the responsibility of the County government to also take charge and ensure full time control of the area, but that has not been the case,” added Kahindi.

He urged drivers to take heed when approaching the area.

Efforts to get confirmation from the police proved futile.
