Hong Kong, CHINA: Kenya women’s rugby sevens team Lionesses’ hopes of winning its maiden main cup were thwarted by Italy in a 26-7 quarter final defeat, a match played in the early hours of Friday April in Hong Kong, China.

The defeat means Kenya will not be a core team in 2017/2018’s Women World Sevens Series as it was available to the sole winner.

Lionesses sailed to quarters after finishing second in its group by beating hosts Hong Kong 24-21 before edging Argentina 17-1 and a 5-7 narrow defeat to Belgium.

Meanwhile, men’s team Shujaa will open its campaign with a tie against Canada starting 1518hrs local time.

The Innocent Simiyu coached team will then on Saturday tackle series leaders South Africa at 0856hrs before taking on France 1245hr in the group matches.

Kenya is placed 12th in the HSBC World Sevens series log on 40 points after six rounds while South Africa tops the standings with 126 points.
