Mother charged in court for selling one week old baby

Mombasa, KENYA: A woman who is accused of selling a one-week-old baby on Monday told the court that she was unable to provide food for the infant, prompting her to give away the baby.

Queen Mueni Mulaa told court  that life was very  tough on her and she offered to give her daughter to Winfred Murigi whom she claims is her sister.

“Most days I sleep without a meal, I decided to give my baby to my sister instead of throwing the baby away,” she told court.

Ms Mueni is charged with child trafficking contrary to section 4 of the counter-trafficking act.

The particulars are that on 2nd March 2017 at Mikindani area within Mombasa, being a mother to a girl aged one-week-old. she gave out her babyto Winfred Murigi at a fee.

She denied the charges before Mombasa senior resident magistrate Edigah Kagoni.

Mr. Kagoni orderd accused person released on a cash bail of Sh.10,000.

The case will be heard on 11th April.
