Mombasa,KENYA:Traders in Kongowea market who received new stalls are already enjoying the benefits of selling their wares from the new markets stalls.

A spot check by Baraka FM at the busy market on Friday,  found that the traders have already moved into their new work stations easing congestion in the market; unlike a few weeks ago when the traders used to hawk their wares from the roadside while using umbrellas to shield it from the scorching sun.

Mrs Victoria Nduku who is the market treasurer and one of the beneficiaries, says that she can serve her customers more comfortably with her merchandise lasting longer.

“Our merchandise is now shielded from the sun and we can attend to our customers more comfortably.” She said.

Albert Juma a trader who also benefited from the stall, says that he now works for longer hours unlike in the previous weeks when he used to close his business early fearing rampant insecurity in the area.

‘Most traders have extended their working hours because security is now available in the area.’ Explained Juma.

Over 1500 traders are expected to benefit from the stalls in the newly built market with the first batch of 450 traders having received the stalls on Friday last week.

The expansion of the market is expected to boost the economy of the coast region as Kongowea is the largest retail market in the region, accommodating traders from counties like Lamu, Kilifi and Kwale.
