Nyeri, KENYA: General Service Unit GSU and Kenya Prisons men and women’s teams respectively carried the day as the curtain of the Kenya Volleyball Federation KVF season opener came down at the Kamkunji Grounds in Nyeri County on Sunday.

The GSU team won men’s challenge trophy by edging counterparts Kenya Defense Force KDF 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 27-25, 25-23) in a nail biting final which saw both sides stretched to the limit before the former emerged the victor.

KDF eliminated Forest Rangers in the first men’s semis with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-18) victory, while GSU stunned a rejuvenated Mombasa Prisons side by straight sets of 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-17) in the other semis.

Despite losing 3-0 (25-23, 35-18, 25-18) to GSU in their first match, Mombasa Prisons regrouped to earn semis slot only to stumble at the hands of GSU.

Elsewhere, Kenya Prisons claimed women’s title by overcoming Bankers KCB 3-2 (22-25, 25-17, 25-17, 19-265, 15-6) in a hard fought finals which had to be decided in the fifth set after both sides were tied 2-2 in the first four sets.
