Conservationists give KWS boss Dr Richard Leakey 7 days to resign over SGR

Nairobi, KENYA: Conservationists have given KWS chairman Dr Richard Leakey seven days to resign following the implementation of Standard Gauge Railway within the Nairobi national park .

In a media briefing in Nairobi on Monday ,Africa Network for Animal Welfare public affairs director Kahindi Lekalehaile and Sidney Quntai who is a community representative, said that Dr Leakey should resign for failing to advise the government about the adverse effects to wildlife after the passage of the SGR project in the park.

“This issue of Dr Leakey’s resignation, we are going to give him seven days to resign together with his board ,failure to which we will take legal action against him because he has violated the law.” Quntai said.

“Dr Richard Leakey the chairman of the Kenya wildlife service should resign for continuing to wrongly advising the president concerning the Nairobi national park in relation to SGR. The SGR project will inflict irreparable damages to the park .” Said Daniel Osoi a community representative said.

They slammed the National Environmental Management Authority’s decision to issue permit for the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway by the Kenya Railway against public and expert advice.
