Mombasa, KENYA: Police in Likoni-Mombasa  have arrested a man suspected to be a notorious leader of an outlawed gang of thugs.

Chege Muthengi,18, was arrested on Thursday evening aboard a ferry vessel by plain clothes officers, as he was escaping after allegedly threatening to behead his sister.

Detectives probing the matter told Baraka FM on Friday that the suspect leads a group of six criminal gangs of the young thugs, who are always armed with machetes.

The arrest of the suspect comes barely three days after police apprehended 14 armed suspects of which 4 were confirmed to be “Watalia” gang members.

Police said Chege’s sister who had been threatened went to report the matter fearing for her life.

According to police, the sister reported her brother to the police after he had threatened to slash her with a machete following family differences.

“The sister came here and reported to us  about the matter. After we interrogated her we realized the details she gave us matched with that of the wanted suspect,” said likoni DCI boss Henry Ndombi.

He said they moved fast and mobilized the officers who traced him as they had gotten information that the suspect was escaping police arrest.

The DCI boss further noted that the suspect has so far divulged crucial information which will assist investigators to arrest more of the criminal gangs terrorizing residents in Likoni.

Meanwhile, a suspected robber who was arrested alongside two women and a man in Kona Mpya Likoni has been transferred to Malindi for further grilling.

The suspect who is also nursing bullet wounds in his chest, is in the list of wanted robbers linked to a series of robberies in Malindi,Ukunda and Mombasa.

Police said the suspect was being sought by detectives in Malindi after his name featured in the list of four wanted robbers in the area.
