Kilifi,KENYA: Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa has cautioned security personnel against branding Chonyi and Kauma communities as members of the secessionist group Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) in Kilifi County.
Marwa said he has been receiving complaints from the two communities that security officers have been victimizing them on the MRC issue.
Addressing a public in a Baraza in Ngamani primary school, Marwa ordered the County Commissioner Joseph Keter to ensure police handle the people with due respect.
“I want that attitude to stop immediately because it doesn’t make any sense to criminalize the entire community because of just a few folks involved in the outlawed group. Kindly deal with the right people,” said Marwa.
He also warned police officers to stop harassing people during patrols especially women selling mnazi at local dens.
“We all know that most of our women from Mwarakaya, Kikambala, Mazeras, Rabai and Kizurini depend on the brew for their daily bread and sustenance of their families in terms of education and other needs. Then why should you harass them?” posed Marwa.
He instead ordered police to ensure regulation time for selling the brew is observed instead of harassing the sellers.
The administrator also cautioned women against selling the brew at odd hours.
