Mombasa,KENYA: A Man who violently robbed off a Mombasa couple a flask of tea and mahamri has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
Omar Ibrahim Otieno was found guilty of robbing the couple on their way to the Aga Khan Hospital to visit a sick relative.
He pleaded guilty to the charge of armed robbery despite numerous warnings by the court that the charge carried a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
The court was told that Otieno and four other men were armed with knives and threatened to harm the complainant.
The five attacked the said couple on 21st December at about 10:00 am at Ganjoni area in Mombasa.
They also stole two mobile phones worth sh. 14,000 shillings and a thousand shillings in cash.
The complainant reported the incident to County askaris who were on patrol. They were later arrested in a kiosk upon identification by the complainant.
‘The accused person understands sentence to the offence he is charged with and he has pleaded guilty. I therefore sentence him to life imprisonment’, Mombasa principal magistrate Francis Kyiambia ruled.
Four other suspects pleaded not guilty to the charge and court ordered them released on a bond of sh 500, 000 each and one surety of a similar amount.
