Chinese national sent to prison for engaging in business without permit

Mombasa,KENYA: A Chinese national was on Tuesday sentenced to one year in prison or pay a fine of sh. 20,000 after finding him guilty of engaging in a business of selling tiles in Mombasa without work permit.

Wu GengPeng pleaded guilty to engaging in business at Shimanzi  area in Mombasa County named  Ujenzi Supplies Limited without work permit.

Immigration officers told the court that went to suspected shop and found accused person selling tiles but when they requested him to produce his work permit he only showed a visa which allowed him to stay in the Country up to March 2017.

He was later arrested and escorted to a police station before he was arraigned in court on Tuesday.

In his ruling, Mombasa Principal Magistrate Francis Kyiambia ordered the passport of the accused person detained upon serving the sentence or payment of court fine.

Meanwhile Four Indian nationals were also charged with the offence of engaging in a business in Mombasa without work permit.

They all pleaded not guilty and Mr. Kyiambia ordered their passport be detained until the case is heard and determined.

They are accused of running a software business in Mombasa without work permit.

However, the four  were released on a bond of  shs 100,000 and one surety of a similar amount.

The case will be heard on 7th February 2017.
