Mombasa, KENYA: Nine members of Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) were on Monday charged in a Mombasa court for allegedly carrying out subversive activities contrary to section 77(1) of penal code.
It is alleged that on 18th December 2016 at Milalani village in Msabweni Sub County within Kwale County, accused persons jointly and unlawfully conducted a fundraising and possessed minutes of a meeting intended to promote feelings of hatred, between different communities in Kenya.
The Msambweni chief reported to the area deputy OCPD when he was informed some nine men suspected to be members of MRC, were meeting in a home of Ali Ali Bandera alleged chairman of the movement.
Police officers went where the meeting was being held and on arrival Mr. Bandera told them that the group was conducting a fundraising to help him solve a case in Kwale court.
Police have alleged to recover some information from the MRC members including; MRC anthem, exercise book having names of the accused persons showing amount of money contributed since October, written documents containing names of prominent personality.
Some Swahili notices read “Pwani hakuna kura, tutawapiga hawa wakamba, wabara wataachishwa kazi” were also recovered.
The prosecution told the court that the accused persons were in possession of two past court judgments; the first was a case between the government of Kenya and MRC and the other between IEBC and MRC.
The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges before Mombasa Principal Magistrate Francis Kyiambia.
Mr. Kyiambia ordered all the accused persons released on a bond of sh. 500,000 each and one surety bond of a similar amount.
Case will be heard on 16, March 2016.
