Mombasa, KENYA: Kenya Revenue Authority KRA on Thursday seized 24 Forty feet containers with concealed Cargo at the Port of Mombasa.
The containers were docked at the port two weeks ago from Dubai and China according to a statement by KRA.
Addressing the press at the scene, the Chief Operation Manager at the Port Joseph Kaguthi, said the concealment was detected after subjecting the containers to scanning.
According to Mr. Kaguthi, out of the 24 containers, 21 contained new Garments and shoes disguised as cold rooms being imported by horticultural farms; while the other three had milk powder disguised as flasks and sewing machines.
Mr. Kaguthi however said through investigations they found out that the above listed company had not acquired for the goods as alleged.
‘’The horticultural farms claimed to have imported the goods denied being in possession of such goods, they told us that they had not ordered for the same,’’ he asserted.
He further added the government could have lost approximately sh.75 million, if the smugglers had managed to sneak the Cargo out of the Port.
Meanwhile, KRA authority said they also managed to intercept three other containers with concealed scrap batteries that were being deported illegally.
KRA said it has since acquired three more scanners in the Port to enhance capacity in intercepting contraband goods.
