Mombasa, KENYA: Police in Mombasa have arrested an alleged top drug baron believed to be the mastermind behind supply of heroine and cocaine in the Coast Region.
The suspect, identified as Mohammed Said alias Swash was intercepted in his hideout in Shikaadamu area, together with other three suspects.
A contingent of police officers has been tasked to track down drug barons, and the suspect, according to police, had been on the police radar alongside five other top wanted drug barons, but had always been evading the police dragnet.
Police said the suspects were arrested while having a meeting in a secluded place,where its believed they were discussing a way forward to supply the ‘’goods” in various places in the county.
Likoni police boss Willy Simba termed the arrest of the suspect as a breakthrough in the war against drugs in the subcounty and entire coastal city of Mombasa.
A source at the station told Baraka FM more than 10 top politicians and businessmen were at Inuka police station with a huge sum of money with an attempt to bail out the suspect.
“These people have money, I have never seen that before. They were ready to give out sh. 1 million,” said an officer.
The arrests come barley two days after police impounded a foreign high class vehicle suspected to have been supplying drugs within the sub-county, and which was allegedly owned by a politician.
The Toyota Prado which is silver in colour, was intercepted by police after it was spotted at the yard of another suspected drug baron popularly known as GOZO.
It is also alleged the suspect operates in the illegal business in Tanzania.
Meanwhile, police are holding a wanted suspect linked to a G3 gun stolen mysteriously at Likoni police station in June this year.
The suspect Juma Rajab, 41, was arrested in Mtongwe area and police said he was armed with a machete at the time of arrest.
Police also said the suspect owns a pistol which was yet to be recovered.
