Mombasa,KENYA:Police in Mombasa have impounded a car allegedly belonging to an ally of Likoni Member of Parliament Masoud Mwahima for ferrying drugs.
The vehicle bearing Ugandan number plates UAV 925 L-was seized in Mtongwe area likoni on Friday by detectives who were acting on a tipoff from members of the public.
The vehicle – silver prado-is said to be owned by a businessman cum politician in Likoni identified as Mr.Omar Bamba.
Police said the vehicle suspected to be ferrying cocaine was intercepted as it was seen at the residence of a suspected drug dealer known as GOZO and who is said to be on the run.
Anti-narcotics police from police headquarters were mobilized to frisk the car at the station.
The owner of the vehicle who is also close ally of Likoni MP Masoud Mwahima was interrogated at the station for hours but later set free as investigations continues.
An officer aware of investigations but who requested to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of the matter, told Baraka fm the MP appeared at the station on Saturday night trying to persuade officers to set free the detained vehicle but his efforts were rejected.
“He came here saying he was the area MP and he knew the owner is a clean man.However, we refused and told him that we will let (sic) the vehicle after we are done with our investigations,”said the officer.
Its alleged Mwahima has been seen using the vehicle on several ocassions .
Likoni police boss Mr. Willy Simba confirmed the reports declaring that war on drugs has been intensified in the area.
“We intercepted the vehicle and we are still doing our investigations.War on drugs has gained momentum,”said the police boss.
By Monday afternoon the vehicle was still detained at the station.
