Mombasa,KENYA: Over 1,000 boda-boda operators in Mombasa are set to receive training on road safety along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

The campaign sponsored by Bamburi Cement Company aims to reduce the number of road accidents associated with December festive season

Speaking on Tuesday during the flagging off of the caravan, Bamburi Cement CEO Bruno Peschenx, said the campaign caravan will have stops at identified locations in Mombasa, Mariakani, Voi, Mtito Andei, Makindu, Sultan, Salama, Masimba, Machakos Junction, Athi River (Mlolongo) among other stops.

Mr. Peschenx said the campaigns have bore fruits as the number of accidents has greatly reduced since the safety campaign started in 2006.

“This safety journey started in 2006, at that time we were recording five to six fatalities and am happy to report that in the past ten years, we have had only one fatality”, he said.

Coast region traffic enforcement officer Mr. Emmanuel Okanda, applauded the initiative calling on other stakeholders to emulate the gesture in order to reduce road accidents especially this season.

“Saving life is an objective of traffic department and we are open to every intervention and measure that would prevent the occurrence of accidents. This is happening at the right time because many families will be travelling this season, so this particular campaign is very important,” said Okanda.

This year’s campaign is dubbed ‘Drive safe, work safe’.
