Suspected robber gunned down in Old town while wrestling with officer

Mombasa,KENYA: Police in Mombasa gunned down a suspected robber Sunday morning in Masjid Mmswalani near Bondeni area.

The suspect who was alleged to be in a group of three, had reportedly wrestled an undercover cop who was said to be on a security mission, trying to rob him off his  firearm.

The suspect and deceased has been identified as Faiz Said, 18 who died at coast general while undergoing treatment after he was shot by the officer.

The shooting happened at Bondeni area adjacent to Gulf bank, where a police officer manning gulf bank was shot dead and his gun taken by a criminal gang on February 2,2015.

The police officer Shukri Ahmed is attached to Kajiado GK prison had been attached to escort Tana river speaker Nur Nassir, who was to attend a meeting at Pride Inn hotel before the incident happened.

According to officer prior to investigations, the incident happened when the said officer left the silent hotel looking for an M-pesa shop.

It is alleged that the officer was accosted by group of three men trying to grab his ceska pistol No.H0993, but the officer wrestled with the suspect and shot him as his two colleagues fled.

The undercover cop who was overwhelmed by the suspect,shot  him three times.

The suspect died soon on arrival at Coast general hospital.

The Old town area has been marked as dangerous, especially for security organs as suspected alshabaab and other criminal gangs are said to be targeting security agents.

Police say the two who escaped were armed.

Mombasa police chief Lucas Ogara confirmed the incident to Baraka FM, saying police have launched investigations to ascertain the motive of the suspect who wanted to rob the police officer his gun.

“We are investigating the matter, we want to know the motive of the suspect who wanted to take the police gun.The two fled but we are following them closely,” said the police boss.
