Lamu, KENYA: Lamu senator Abu Chiaba has urged Lamu youth to register and acquire voters cards in order to prepare for the 2017 general elections.
Speaking in Mpeketoni on Wednesday,Chiaba said it would wise for the youth to arm themselves early with the necessary documentation to enable them elect leaders of their choice when the time comes.
Chiaba expressed discontent that many youth at the coast do not have voter’s cards yet they form the majority of the voters in the region.
He said it was time for every youth who had attained the age of 18 years and over to make an effort to acquire an ID and voters cards to enable them partake in elections.
“As Jubilee for instance we intend to register over 6million members all over the country .that can’t happen without IDs and voters cards,” said Chiaba.
He urged youth to be peaceful and avoid being misused by politicians during the election period.
A huge percentage of Lamu youth don’t have ID cards.
This follows a move by the national government to halt the ID issuance exercise for about a year owing to insecurity concerns.
The exercise however resumed in August last year.
