Mombasa,KENYA:A suspected robber who was killed by a mob and his body burnt following a botched robbery incident in Likoni on Monday had been released from Shimo la Tewa GK Prison following a presidential amnesty.

Athman Omar, 25 was lynched by an irate mob for allegedly attacking a businessman and slashed him with a machete before he was cornered and beaten.

Unconfirmed reports say the deceased was a member of criminal gang christened “young thug”, from Vyemani village in Likoni.

Likoni police boss Willy Simba confirmed on Wednesday saying the records shows that the deceased had past criminal records and he was serving a jail term at Shimo La Tewa before he got a state pardon.

Mr. Simba confirmed that Omar had been jailed for at least one and a half years.

The OCPD also told Baraka FM that the family was aware of the suspect’s activities and had seemingly given up on him when they turned down an offer for postmortem exercise.

The police boss said the family pleaded to be allowed to pick the body for burial as it was a waste of time and resources to carry postmortem since he had a bad reputation.

“I asked them to let a postmortem to be conducted, but they told police there was no need as it was a waste of resources for such a criminal”, said Simba.

The suspect was said to be armed with arrows and Dogs during the robbery attempt.

Police recovered four arrows and several machetes as his accomplices escaped.
