Mombasa, KENYA: A suspected robber has been lynched and his body burnt beyond recognition in Likoni Mombasa.
The suspect is believed to be a member of a criminal gang christened “the young thug” which has been terrorizing members of public in the area.
He was accosted following a robbery attempt in the Thursday 6 am incident.
The suspect who was armed with arrows, swords and dogs, was accosted around Miami area in Likoni after he had attacked a businessman and seriously injured him.
The suspect Athuman Omar,25,is said to have been in a gang of five at the time of robbery.
Four arrows and 2 machetes were recovered at the scene, according to police.
His four accomplice and three of their trained dogs are believed to have escaped and police have launched a manhunt.
The killings come barely a day after top security organs in Mombasa county held a baraza meeting over security in the sub county, to discuss re-emergence of criminal gangs who have caused panic to residents.
The meeting was chaired by Mombasa County Commissioner Evans Achoki and other top security officials.
A police source at the scene told Baraka FM they had a hard time tracing some of the body parts of the suspect as he was cut into pieces and his body set a blaze.
“Only family members came at the scene and they were able to identify the suspects by his clothes he wore which had been removed before he was burnt,” said the police source.
“He also had a scar at his right leg which was also used to identify him,” added the source.
Likoni police boss Willy Simba confirmed the killing of the suspect, saying he was a well known robber and he has been operating at night with other members.
The police boss claimed the suspects were two and that they were looking for his accomplice.
“He is known in the area, he has been terrorizing the public. We have information that he is from Vijiweni; that is his home area,” said police boss.
The remains were moved to Coast General morgue.
