Limbe, CAMEROON: Harambee Starlets let slip a 1-0 lead to suffer a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Ghana in their Women’s Africa Nation Cup AWCON group B match played in Limbe, Cameroon on Sunday night.
Esse Akida put Starlets in the 23rd minute as the David Ouma coached side looked set to mark their first appearance in the continental showpiece with a bang.
After clinging on the 1-0 advantage until the break, things turned unfortunate to Starlets with the Black Queens levelling through Samira Suleman minutes after the restart.
Referee would then punish Elizabeth Addo in what according to the pundits was a minor error, rewarding Ghana a controversial penalty that saw the Black Queens went 2-1 up.
Ghana then took the match beyond Starlets reach by prodding in their third goal thanks to Portia Boakye superb free-kick, which came minutes after Starlets had been denied a penalty despite Akida being fouled in the box.
The defeat means Starlets will now have to claim maximum points against Nigeria and Mali in their remaining Pool B matches in order to qualify for semis.
Title holders and record winners Nigeria kicked off their campaign with a 6-0 thrashing of hapless Mali in the other group match played on Sunday evening.
