Government to come up with Law governing social media ahead of 2017 polls, says Nkaiserry

Nairobi, KENYA:Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaiserry has said that his ministry and parliament will initiate a social media and hatespeech legislation to curb social media outrage and tame hatemongers.

In a media briefing in Nairobi on Friday after he met religious leaders,Nkaissery said that his ministry is working hand in hand with parliament to come up with a law which will allow IEBC to ban politicians who are culpable of hate
speech for 10- years.

Nkaissery said that those who are misusing  social media will not be spared either as the ministry is also fast tracking some input, in order
to come up with legislation to punish people who misuse the facility following the emergency of radicalization through social media across the globe.

“We want to put a law to cover two things ,social media and hatespeech.Politicians ,proven that have committed hatespeech they should be
banned for 10years,”Nkaisserry said.

He pointed out that the legislation will be In place before the next year’s polls.

The CS urged the vice chancellors of various universities   across the country to monitor and advise students of  their respective university
in order to minimize radicalization cases in the institutions,insisting such intiatives should be a replica from parents to their children especially now that students are on holidays
in bid to minize radicalization cases across the country.
