Kwale, KENYA: Ukunda based SS Assad were crowned champions of the inaugural Taifa Chapati cup after overcoming Shimba Hills 5-4 in post-match penalties staged at Ukunda show ground over the weekend.
The tie was decided from the spot kick after the two sides played out to a barren draw during the regulation time despite creating goal scoring chances in the normal time.
SS Assad converted their penalties through Sunday Mwambito, Suleiman Dele, Hamisi Mwapaka, Abdalla Juma and Daile Kaitano.
While, Suleiman Mwasikwa, Idriss Ali, Rashid Yahya and Ali Kibwewe were on target for Shimba Hills.
The final was preceded by the third place playoff clash where Super Matuga edged Dumna 1-0.
En route to finals, SS Assad eliminated Dumna 4-2 through post match penalties while Shimba Hills knocked out Supa Matuga 5-3 similarly from the spot kicks.
Having triumphed SS Assad were awarded a Champions trophy, cash prize of Ksh 50,000, players medals and five bales of wheat courtesy of sponsors Mombasa Maize Millers Limited.
Shimba Hills took home first runners up trophy, cash prize of Ksh 30,000, players’ medals and five bales of wheat flour.
Supa Matuga who finished third received trophy, cash prize of 20,000 players medals and five bales of wheat flour.
The one month tournament was played on a knockout format with 20 teams from Kwale and Mombasa counties taking part.
