Mombasa, KENYA:Police in Mombasa have arrested dozens of suspected criminals and drug peddlers both men and women during a dawn swoop,police bosses confirmed Sunday.
The 25 suspects were arrested in Likoni sub-county saturday night in an operation targeting criminals gangs accused of carrying out attacks against residents and robbing them.
Police also recovered several crude weapons and drugs from the suspects.
Likoni police chief Willy Simba told Baraka FM the operation was carried out by a special team of GSU officers in conjunction with marine police.
The crackdown comes barely a week after the criminal gang of Watalia and bodaboda riders clashed in likoni.
Two suspected members of the gang were killed, sparking animosity and protest between the rival groups.
“It was about 3am when the police staged the crackdown in their hideouts and along the ocean. We managed to arrest them and we are keeping them in police cells awaiting to be taken to court,”said Mr. Simba who led the operation.
He said the suspects were being profiled at the station before being taken to court.
The police boss noted that the crackdown will continue inorder to weed out all criminals in the subcounty.
It is suspected that a majority of the criminal gangs have now shifted from Kisauni and Changamwe and are now hiding in Likoni.
