Mombasa, KENYA: Police in Mombasa have rescued a 35-year-old man who threw himself into the Indian Ocean Friday morning because his wife had frustrated him.
Police said Josphat Borongo jumped off a crowded MV Kwale vessel in the middle of the ocean across Likoni channel at about 10:00 am, as it crossed from South Coast to Mombasa Island.
He plunged into the deep waters while yelling about his wife, who has not been identified. Mr Barongo, was later rescued by divers aboard the ferry and police officers.
He was given first aid before he was rushed to a local hospital.
Likoni police boss Willy Simba said Barongo was then detained at Likoni police station for attempting to kill himself and would be charged with attempted suicide.
“Barongo tried to kill himself by jumping into ocean when MV kwale was midway from the island to the mainland. The man, who was stammering, kept on saying his wife had been frustrating him for a long time,” said Mr Simba.
Cases of men trying to commit suicide at the Indian ocean waters due to domestic violence have been on the rise as this is not the first of it’s case ever since the year began.
