Mombasa businessman shot in a botched robbery, suspect lynched by mob

Mombasa, KENYA: A man has been shot dead and a businessman seriously wounded in Majengo area Mombasa; by a suspected criminal gang.

One of the suspects was also lynched by members of the public,as a Ceska pistol with 7 rounds of ammunition was recoverd.

Police said three suspected armed criminals in a motorcycle waylaid a businessman at around Memon villa in Tononoka at around 7pm Monday night.

The businessman is alleged to  work in Changamwe and he is reported to have the tendency to park his personal car at Memon before going home.

The suspects were tracking the businessman who is believed to have been carrying a huge amount of money,police said.

Witnesses say the armed men ambushed the businessman after he boarded a Tuktuk with his bag; as he was going home after he left his vehicle at the parking.

The suspects then  shot the man on his abdomen after he had resisted to hand over the cash to the criminals,police said.

After taking the bag, the suspects  tried escaping on foot after their motorcycle developed mechanincal complications,  but were cornered by the public after an alarm was raised.

According to police,one of the criminals  was stoned to death.

Police said that one of the suspects who was armed, ran towards sabasaba area but he was cornered again and beaten by amob.

He however shot another man before he dropped his firearm.

The suspect had used 8 bullets while he was firing randomly as he was escaping.

Police said the businessman is in a stable condition after undergoing a  successful operation to remove a lodged bullet in the abdomen.

Mombasa deputy county commissioner Salim Bondo confirmed the incident, saying the details of the recovered firarm have been forwarded to ballistic experts for investigations.
