Lamu, KENYA: Police in Lamu are holding and interrogating a man who attempted to escape police custody shortly after he was captured, after being found in possession of 50 stones of bhang on Monday morning.

The 30 year old Athman Vae from Mbwajumwali is said to be a major drug peddler and supplier in Lamu East Sub County.

He was arrested on Monday at Mtangawanda jetty in Lamu East as he was attempting to ferry the bhang from Lamu island to Kizingitini in Lamu East.

The bhang consignment had been disguised in a box covered with onions and tomatoes.

The man is said to have jumped into the ocean and swam for over two hours with handcuffs on his hands before he was finally recaptured by police who swam after him while others pursued on boat.

Confirming the incident, Lamu East Police commissioner Muchangi Kioi termed the suspect as dangerous and notorious and said he was a major drug seller who has been on police radar for long.

“We have him in custody and shall have him arraigned soon,” said Kioi.

Kioi said in the ongoing crackdown on drug barons and peddlers, the police had this month alone nabbed bhang and heroin worth a street value of Sh.150,000.
