Simiyu succeeds Ayimba as Shujaa head coach

Nairobi,KENYA: Innocent Simiyu has been appointed as the new head coach of the national Rugby Sevens men’s team Shujaa.

The former 7s and 15s captain was elevated at the helm in a change of guard confirmed by Kenya Rugby Union KRU on Monday.

He replaces celebrated Benjamin Ayimba whose contract expired on September after having lead Kenya to a historic campaign last season, winning maiden World Rugby Sevens Series title.

Despite being among the 14 applicants for the job, Ayimba was overlooked with words doing round he was not considered following his sour relationship with the union.

Simiyu’s first task will be to lead Shujaa in the first leg of the Series, Dubai Sevens in December where they have been pooled in Group D alongside Australia, Japan and France.

Meanwhile, Kevin Wambua has been handed the mantle as the head coach for the women’s national side, Lionesses.
