Lamu,KENYA:The county government of Lamu has set aside Sh.34.9 Million in this year’s financial budget for tea and Mandazi for various departments in the county.
This comes even as over 30,000 residents are staring at starvation following a prolonged drought.
In the budget, sh.8.9 Million has been allocated for tea in the office of the county governor Issa Timamy and his visitors.
The county assembly of Lamu was also allocated Sh.6.9 Million for breakfast and refreshments.
Residents have however expressed their shock and criticized such an allocation just for food when the county had other pressing matters that required such funds.
May feel the funds should have been diverted to the health sector to improve the condition of dispensaries and hospitals across the county which are said to be in dire need.
Locals also feel the money would have been used to purchase dialysis machines for kidney patients who at the moment have to go to Mombasa and Nairobi for such services.
“How expensive can tea and mandazi get in this county. Can someone explain why the governor can allow for such massive misappropriation and yet he is always saying he can’t do development here because Lamu gets little money. How about these millions going to tea alone.its not about the amount allocated by government,it’s the wisdom to put to use the little you claim to have been given and Timamy has failed,”said Ali Musadiffa.
Recently, the assembly hit headlines for allocating Sh.670, 000 for the purchase of coffins.
