Mombasa,KENYA: The Kenya Defence force KDF on Thursday  donated 13 wheelchairs and other equipment to disabled pupils at Mtongwe Primary School in Likoni, Mombasa.

Speaking during a visit to the school, Mtongwe Navy base commander Brigadier Loonena Naisho, said the move is a way of giving back to the community and is in line with marking  the KDF Day to be celebrated on 14th October.

“We are celebrating our KDF Day on the 14th of October where we celebrate our heroes who have sacrificed their lives for the nation. So we have decided in the line of celebrating we make a contribution to this school”, said Brigadier Loonena.

Lonena added that donating wheelchairs and other stuffs to the disabled, is just one of their corporate social responsibility, mentioning some other activities like blood donation as other social responsibility.

The school Principal Sarah Mungai welcomed the move saying that it will really help them.

“This assistance has come at the right time because we have a challenge especial to the cerebral palsy children. It’s not enough compared to our 60 children who are in need of wheel chairs, but at least it will really help tackle the challenge,” said madam Mungai.

Mtongwe Primary School has three units; Regular school, mentally challenged unit and cerebral unity.

The cerebral palsy unit was estbalished in  2014 with only three children, and now it has about 60 children.
