Lamu, KENYA: At least one person has been confirmed dead and scores others injured after a Lamu bound T.S.S bus veered off the road and rolled severally at Mkunumbi area in Lamu West at around 8.30am on Thursday.

While confirming the accident,Lamu county commissioner said the deceased succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at the Mpeketoni sub-county hospital where he was rushed after the accident.

More than ten other passengers have also been admitted at the same hospital with serious injuries.

Kanyiri said the deceased succumbed due to bleeding after he lost his legs in the accidents; whose cause has been blamed on the bad state on the Lamu-Garsen road and careless driving.

“One person has lost their life and several others have been admitted after a T.S.S bus they had boarded to Mombasa rolled at Mkunumbi area. Both the deceased and the injured are at the Mpeketoni hospital. We are trying to establish the real cause of the accident,”said Kanyiri.

Due to the dilapidated state of the road, the commissioner has urged drivers to be vigilant and keen when driving on the road in order to avoid similar accidents.

Kanyiri said despite the bad state of the road, drivers still had a duty to ensure their lives of the passengers are safeguarded by observing all traffic rules including driving at the required speed.

A Chinese company Wu Yi that won the Sh. 10.3 billion tender to reconstruct the road is yet to start work but the commissioner was quick to assure that work will commence soon.
