Lamu fisheries sector expected to grow with modern ice plant and fish market

Lamu, KENYA: The department of fisheries in Lamu has expressed optimism that sector will improve greatly upon completion of an Ice Plant and Fish market that are currently under construction in Kizingitini and Kiunga in Lamu East.

Fishermen have complained of lacking storage facilities for their catch and have attested that 70% of fish goes bad while being transported to the markets.

Lamu county Fisheries Director Abdalla Masoud said Sh.15 Million had gone into the construction of the Ice plant in Kizingitini town while Sh.6.5 Million had been used to renovate the Kiunga Fish market all of which are expected to be completed soon.

He said his office was also scouting for markets in other counties and foreign nations to enable the Lamu fishermen reap maximum benefits from their fishing venture.

“All this are efforts to better the sector and ensure that fishermen benefit from their trade.we want to try as much as we can to reduce the challenges faced,”said Masoud.
