Nairobi, KENYA: Ethics and Anti-corruption commission Ceo Halakhe Waqo has said that so far 1.8 billion shillings has been confirmed to have been lost in the National Youth Service (NYS)saga.
Appearing before parliamentary accounts committee (PAC) chaired by Rarieda legislator Nicholas Gumbo,Waqo said that contrary to earlier information that the money lost under mysterious circumstances in the service was more than the earlier said amount of sh. 791 million.
He indicated that the amount of money lost from NYS kitty is worth billions of shillings.
Waqo told the committee that the amount of money lost keeps on increasing, whereby in December last year the commission’s arm of investigations revealed that sh 1.3 billion had been looted.
He indicated that measures have been put in place to recover the money; whereby millions have been freezed.
He said that the commission is fast tracking its investigations and forwarding suspects names and companies involved in the saga to offices in charge of prosecution; downplaying allegations that the commission is not doing enough to bring them to book.
The commission has urged parliament to amend mobile banking legislation; so as to help in combating massive corruption which is taking place through M-pesa transactions.
