Kilifi,KENYA:The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) on Friday donated foodstuffs worth Kshs. 1.5 million to families living in the hunger stricken area of Ganze, Kilifi County.
The food donation included maize flour, cooking oil and beans.
According to KPA, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy has empowered it to focus efforts to education, health, and other related needs like disaster and hunger thus caring for the surrounding community.
KPA managing director Mrs. Catherine Mturi-Wairi said they got concerned after reports of devastating effects of famine in the area which is aggravated by crop failure due to hot and dry climatic conditions.
“It is sad to note that more than 300,000 people in Kilifi County are facing starvation and children are the worst affected according to the county government of Kilifi. Your situation is very serious and for sure I disturb us when we see our children trapped in this situation”. She said.
Since 2000, through its CSR programme, KPA has constructed over 30 schools and three dispensaries in Coastal region.
“We hope that our gesture will go a long way towards alleviation the situation in this area as you wait for your harvest and support from other well wishers”. Said the managing director.
On drought, Mrs. Mturi-Wairi promised the residence that KPA will try to help them in making sure they access clean drinking water thus relieving women who walk for more than 7 kilometers in search of water.
