Lamu, KENYA: The National Lands Commission-NLC has accused a section of Lamu county leaders for frustrating efforts of the commission to resolve and address land matters for their own selfish interests.
The NLC chair Muhammad Swazuri said some leaders have waged war against the NLC and had made a tendency to challenge every single decision undertaken by the commission on land matters.
Speaking on Sunday, Swazuri the commission had made all necessary efforts to ensure Lamu county leaders are fully involved in land matters and decisions being addressed by the NLC but that despite that, some of the leaders have never honored invitations whenever the commission officials are on the ground.
Swazuri said there is need for county leaders to cooperate and work with the NLC in order to resolve the rampant land issues in the county.
He defended the NLC saying the commission fulfills adequately and effectively its constitutional mandate.
He also denied by the county government of Lamu that NLC officials had been interfering with land matters in the county and executing major decision without consulting and involving the county government.
“The NLC mandate is to ensure land disputes all over the country are addressed. Our mandate is perfectly illustrated by the constitution and we totally adhere to that. What I don’t understand is why some leaders have chosen to make the work of this commission so challenging. They should be supporting us so we can help resolve these land issues here but have instead chosen to do otherwise,” said Swazuri.
Lamu Governor Issa Timamy criticized Swazuri for deliberately overlooking the county leadership whenever making land decisions in the county.
Recently, the county government of Lamu filed a petition at the Malindi law courts barring the survey of the controversial Manda Settlement Scheme by the NLC.
