Mombasa, KENYA: Police in Mombasa have arrested a former Recce Squad officer who escaped their dragnet in Nairobi last month.
The suspect Erick Ngethe Kanyingi, was arrested at Kizingo, Mombasa Island area around 1 am Friday.
Eric was an officer with Recce squad and was behind last month’s foiled attack on the headquarters in Ruiru.
Police said a special team was formed to arrest the suspect after they got a tip off from members of the public.
Confirming the arrest on Friday, Mombasa police chief Lucas Ogara said the suspect was a deserter and he was under tight security in an unknown destination, where he is being interrogated.
Police believe the suspect has been hiding in the area for a long period of time since he escaped.
“The officer is being interrogated as we speak now,we will take him to where he was reported to commit an offence,he was living alone in the room at the time of his arrest,” said police boss.
The police boss said the suspect was being trailed since he escaped,the arrest.He did not divulge more information saying the matter was sensitive.
“We got information that the suspect escaped from his camp with other weapons but we did not get the weapons during the arrest,”police boss said
The suspect who was said to be radicalized was planning to attack his fellow officers from the camp.
Police involved in the operation told Baraka FM the officer is well trained in hostage and rescue missions.
Other reports said the suspect served in the force until 2014 when he deserted for unknown reasons.
