The Mpeketoni law courts in Lamu have released on bond a man who was charged with being in possession of turtle meat.
Bwasadi Lali, 45, was on Friday released on a sh.10,000 bond after he denied being found in illegal possession of over 50 kilos of turtle meat
He had been arrested by KWS officers in Shanga area in Lamu East on Tuesday this week.
Two other suspects who escaped police custody are yet to be found and charged for the same.
The case will be heard on September 27 this year.
Turtle fishing is illegal and currently there is a ban forbidding fishermen from catching turtles whose global population is dwindling with fears of extinction of the turtle mounting.
Lamu residents want to be allowed to catch and eat turtles on claims that turtle fat, soup and fat are of great medicinal value, a belief that has been labeled as misleading and untrue by health and nutrition experts.
