Nairobi, KENYA: Nyamira senator Mongare okongo and his Kiambu counterpart kimani wamatangi have proposed a bill in the senate seeking to introduce tough penalties on rogue drivers including corporal punishment .

In a media briefing at parliamentary buildings Mongare said that there is need for tough  traffic penalities to deal with rogue drivers  after it emerged that the number of accidents in the country have sky rocketed into 1600 this year .

Some of the ammendments Mongare proposes are caning of rogue drivers and suspension of their driving licences indicating that current penalities are pretty lenient.

“I am preparing an ammendment to the traffic act, that in addition to hefty fines include corporal punishment to be administered con currently when an offence has been established.” Mongare said.

He also proposes total ban of the licence of  a driver who has caused death by negligent driving .

The bill also seeks for an  enhancement of electronic mobile  courts  with a command center in every county.

He urged president Uhuru Kenyatta to declare road accidents a national disaster.

On the other hand, Senator Wamatangi wants to propose ammendment bill which seeks truck drivers who intentionally run over some business establishments to be obliged to repay.
