Kwale, KENYA: Village and Nyumba Kumi initiative elders in Kilifi County are in the process of starting up a SACCO aimed at empowering them financially.
The elders said on Wednesday the SACCO will be aimed at empowering them economically through loans to start up business and development projects.
Speaking during a meeting with Kilifi North legislature Gideon Mung’aro to help them start up the SACCO Gabriel Katana, a village elder in Uyombo- Matsangoni said the move will help them have something to depend on.
“For many years we have been offering services to Kenyans on volunteer basis, but we all are Kenyans also and we need money to live. This move is a dream come true for us.” Said Katana.
Katana added that the County and National government has overlooked them for so long while they are always on the forefront to ensure security in the county.
“We really do not know why the government has not been noticing our efforts to maintain peace and order? By starting up this SACCO we will be in a position to bargain for our rights.” added Katana.
Mama Maglas, a Nyumba Kumi ambassador from Mnarani called upon the SACCO management to be endorsed to ensure transparency and trust on financial matters.
“As we start up this SACCO, my urge to the management is to be transparent and trustworthy we have experienced so many initiatives fail due to lack of transparency,” said Mama Maglas.
Kilifi North Mp Gideon Mung’aro assured them of cooperation in their journey to opening the SACCO and that he will see to it that it prospers.
