Mombasa, KENYA: A showdown is expected on Teusday afternoon at the Mombasa county assembly, as  the civil societies in the area have planned to halt discussion on the proposed 2016/17 Mombasa County Budget.

The civil societies accuse the Mombasa County representatives of sabotaging the public forum, conducted to collect public opinion on the budget.

On Monday, a forum set to collect public opinion on the budget, ended abruptly, after a group of Mombasa citizens led by civil societies, disrupted the sitting; citing some irregularities and also claiming that the budget document was published in a way that they could not read.

They also claimed that the MCA’s have some hidden agenda.

They faulted the whole process saying they were not given enough time to go through the document, so that they can give relevant opinion on the same.

“We are very disappointed with this forum, we have come here since morning, but what the county budget committee is showing us is disrespect, we want the budget not to be read in the parliament, until all the issues we have raised are resolved,”  said one citizen who attended the sitting.

They raised concerns about the last 2015/16 budget, saying it did not benefit the Mombasa resident, so they do not want that to happen this time.

However, nominated MCA who is also a member of the budget committee Sarah Nyamvula, said it’s there right to raise concerns, terming it as democracy and promised to fully involve the public before calling for another forum.
