Mombasa,KENYA:The Mombasa County Assembly was on Monday gripped by panic after hate leaflets were found scattered inside the offices of assembly speaker Thadius Rajwayi and majority leader Abdalla Kasagamba.
The leaflets were authored in Swahili, and warned the speaker and Kasagamba of dire consequences for opposing Governor Ali Hassan Joho.
The leaflets accuse the speaker of disregarding what is described as his political master, Governor Joho, and threaten both the speaker and leader of Majority with death if they fail to resign within 24 hours.
Majority leader Kasagamba reacted with concern over the leaflets and called for speedy investigations into the author of the leaflets, adding that his life was in danger.
He claimed he had been attacked last week by a group of criminals as he was leaving his office.
On Monday morning a group of county assembly members who are loyal to the Majority leader gathered in his office armed with clubs saying they were ready to defend him.
Mombasa County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim asked the complainants to report the matter to any nearest police station.
“Investigations will only commence once the complainants report the matter to police,”said Maalim.
It was not immediately clear who was behind the leaflets but there have been protracted differences between Assembly members allied to Governor Joho and those backing the Governor’s political opponents including Nyali legislator Hezron Awiti.
Phone calls to Joho over the leaflets went unanswered.
