Kwale, KENYA: Security in Kwale county,Bonje area has been beefed up after 40 more security personnel were deployed to track down Al shabaab suspects in the area.
The officers are from General Service Unit,GSU,regular police,Administraion police and Anti-terror police unit ATPU.
The 40 officers were sent from Mombasa and they are expected to track down Al shaabaab suspects believed to be behind the recent killings.
Police say at least 300 Al shabaab returnees are back in Kwale County alone from Somalia.
The deployment follows the killings of three village elders and an Al shabaab returnee who had surrendered to government three weeks ago.
Coast region police commander Francis Wanjohi confirmed to Baraka FM the deployment of more officers in the South Coast region saying security was going to be heightened.
“We had to send more officers to the area,they are in both uniform and civilian.The security committee came into agreement and now there is calm unlike in the past few weeks,”said police boss.
Police believe the suspects were targeting security agents and village elders on suspicion they were giving crucial information to police on their return to the country.
The police boss noted that intelligence reports indicates that 100 Al shabaab returnees are back in Mombasa alone, while 300 are in Kwale county.
He said the 100 who are back in Mombasa had surrendered following government amnesty.
Wanjohi added that they are monitoring them very closely.
