Lamu, KENYA: Lamu women rep Shakilla Abdalla has condemned the manner in which a section Cord legislators were arrested by police over hate speech allegations.
Speaking in Lamu on Wednesday, Shakillla said the manner in which the leaders were arrested was unwarranted and belittling of their stature.
She said the leaders should have been given the chance to present themselves to the police instead of being maltreated and mishandled.
She said there is need for the police to refrain from being used by politicians to pursue various agendas and instead try to remain impartial in the course of their job.
“I don’t think there was need for the police to arrest Cord leaders in such a shameful manner. Its not like they had refused to show up for the summons.Lets respect each other even as we pursue our political interests and those of the nation,” said Shakilla.
Shakilla said there was also need for all concerned parties not to forego the real issue that is the IEBC and shift attention to something different.
“All this is happening just because of one issue, the IEBC.Whether of not the hate speech accusations are true, that’s the court’s job to find out but let’s not forget or derail our focus.” Said Shakilla.
The MP called for the speedy prosecution of the arrested Cord leaders in order to avoid creating any unnecessary unrest among their supporters.
“We must pursue peace at all costs. In this case, let these leaders be arraigned quickly so that we can get it over with. The last thing we need is unrest both from Jubilee or Cord supporters,” she said.
