Mombasa, KENYA: Exporters in Mombasa have lodged complains of harassment by the Nyali bridge road block police officers; whom they say extort money from them by asking bribes.
In a forum where Mombasa County Exporters had an opportunity to discuss opportunities and issues affecting their business on Thursday, the exporters explained that this affects their export business adversely.
Samuel Njora Tsavo Aquarium Director, an exporter who deals with export of live fish; says whenever he transports his goods to the airport he often encounters this challenge at the road blocks.
“I have all my papers and when i arrive at the Nyali roadblock the officers ask me why am using a Probox and this is the only car i can afford and i have comprehensive insurance.” Said Njora.
“If you ask the officer to give you his uniform number he refuses and starts frustrating you to bribe him or else you won’t leave.” Continued Njora.
He further added that by the time one gets to the airport you miss your flight and you end up incurring a lot of losses.
Mombasa County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim present at the event assured the exporters that this will be handled as they have received a lot of complains about the same before.

“I am meeting with the county commanders and we are going to discuss thoroughly about the road block at Nyali bridge all the way to Sabaki, we will make sure these concerns are addressed.” Said Maalim.
He however advised them to co-operate at the road blocks by stopping for checks; as they are put there in order to curb terror that has greatly affected businesses in the region.
