Police officer charged in court for loss of firearm in Mombasa

Mombasa, KENYA: A police officer was on Monday charged in a Mombasa court for the loss of a firearm with ammunition contrary to the the National Police Service Act.

Police constable Alexandar Kipyegomen attached to Likoni police station is alleged to have lost by neglect a G3 riffle serial number 77097156 loaded with 20 round of ammunition, which was entrusted to him by virtue of being a police officer.

The accused person is alleged to have committed the offence between 3rd and 4th June at Likoni police station within Mombasa county.

He denied charges before Mombasa senior resident magistrate Edgah Kagoni.

“I have served as a police officer for twenty years and I have a family which depends on me,I request court to release me on a cash bail.” He told the court.

Prosecution did not oppose cash bail and asked for a near date to enable them finish the case before accused person is reinstated back to his duties.

He was released on a cash bail of sh. 20, 000.

This the case will be heard on 13 June.
