Lamyu, KENYA: The Lamu county security committee has begun an initiative to harmonize farmers and herders who are embroiled in a bitter conflict over grazing lands in the region.
To the effect, the committee led by Deputy County commissioner Stephen Sangolo is touring Mpeketoni,Baharini and Witu divisons where the conflicts are said to be rife.
Most of the herders are from neighboring Tana River and Garissa counties and are accused of deliberately feeding their livestock on farms in the respective divisions in Lamu.
Sangolo however said there is need for the two sides to co-exist harmoniously without inconveniencing one another.
He said there was need for the conflict to be addressed on time before it blew up into an unmanageable situation.
“As the county security office we are simply exercising our mandate to ensure there is peace and harmony amongst all people here.we shall put in place some strategies to ensure this conflicts come to a stop,” said Sangolo.
The farmers are however demanding that the herders be sent out of the county in order to enable them go about their businesses in peace.
