Mombasa, KENYA: For the first time Mombasa has crowned a deaf and mute girl to represent the county in the Miss Tourism Kenya beauty pageant, that sees beauties from the 47 counties compete for the coveted tittle.
21-year-old Babelyn Mukila defied all odds and emerged top to take away the crown during the beauty pageant that took place on Saturday night at Rizfar Hair and Beauty college.
The event that was organized by Rizfar together with other well-wishers, saw only 5 participants take part in the beauty pageant.
The 2nd and 1st runners-up were taken by 24-year-old Patricia Maina and 25-year-old Ruth Karimi respectively.
Babelyn a beautician student at Mombasa Technical Training Institute (MTTI), was born deaf and mute but this did not stop her from following her dreams and last year she participated in the same event; where she emerged 2nd Runners-up in the 2015 Miss Tourism Mombasa County pageant.
Through her interpreter, when asked what motivated her; she says it’s her passion to represent the deaf and mute society that gives her the motivation.
“We as the deaf people have never got an opportunity to be represented in such events and so we want to show people that we also can do this,” said Babelyn through her interpreter.
The deaf and mute society was also present at the event and their joy could not be hidden as it was written all over their faces.
Babelyn will on Monday join other beauties from all over the 47 counties in Nairobi where they will take part in a photo shoot.
Miss Tourism Kenya 2016 finals is expected to take place in Vihiga County from June 18 to June 19.
